Festivals in India 2027, full calendar for every religion
Every major festival and holiday in India in 2027, month by month: Holi, Eid, Diwali, Christmas, Gurpurab and more, with the official government holiday list.
India celebrates more festivals than almost any other country, and in 2027 they follow a familiar rhythm: Makar Sankranti and Pongal in January, Ramadan and Eid in February and March, Holi in March, Raksha Bandhan in August, Navratri and Dussehra in early October, Diwali at the end of October and Christmas in December.
This guide lists the major festivals and holidays of every religion in India in 2027, month by month. It is based on the Union government's official holiday list for 2027, issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on 16 July 2026, and on festival calendars (panchangs and the Islamic Hijri calendar) for the dates that the government list does not cover.
Key points
- Holi: colours on Monday 22 March by most panchangs; the government holiday is Tuesday 23 March.
- Eid ul-Fitr: expected Wednesday 10 March; Eid al-Adha (Bakrid): expected Monday 17 May. Both depend on the moon.
- Raksha Bandhan: Tuesday 17 August. Janmashtami: Wednesday 25 August (government holiday).
- Dussehra: Saturday 9 October. Diwali: Friday 29 October.
- Guru Nanak Jayanti: Sunday 14 November. Christmas: Saturday 25 December.
- The government's 2027 list has 17 gazetted holidays for central government offices in Delhi.
How festival dates are decided
Indian festivals follow four different calendars, which is why their dates move every year.
| Calendar | Festivals | Why the date moves |
|---|---|---|
| Hindu lunar calendar (panchang) | Holi, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, Navratri, Dussehra, Diwali | Based on the phases of the moon, so dates shift by up to about three weeks each year |
| Solar calendar | Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Vaisakhi, Vishu | Based on the Sun's movement, so they fall on almost the same date every year |
| Islamic Hijri calendar | Ramadan, Eid ul-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Muharram | A lunar year about 11 days shorter than the Western year, and each month starts with the sighting of the new moon |
| Gregorian calendar | Christmas, New Year, national days | Fixed dates; Easter and Good Friday follow a church rule based on the spring full moon |
Two practical points follow from this.
- Panchangs can differ by a day. A festival is tied to a lunar day (tithi), which does not start at midnight. Depending on when it begins and ends, different almanacs and regions can mark the same festival on neighbouring days. Holi, Janmashtami and Makar Sankranti all have this kind of split in 2027.
- Islamic dates are confirmed only a day before. Eid and Muharram dates are announced after the moon is sighted, so the dates below are expected dates. In India they are often a day later than in Saudi Arabia.

Government holidays in 2027
The DoPT order of 16 July 2026 lists 17 gazetted holidays for central government offices in Delhi and New Delhi in 2027: Republic Day, Eid ul-Fitr, Holi, Good Friday, Ram Navami, Mahavir Jayanti, Eid al-Adha, Buddha Purnima, Muharram, Independence Day, Milad-un-Nabi, Janmashtami, Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, Diwali, Guru Nanak Jayanti and Christmas.
Central government staff can also take two restricted holidays a year from a separate list, which includes festivals such as Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Maha Shivratri, Easter, Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh Chaturthi, Onam, Karva Chauth and Chhath Puja.
A few things to know:
- Moon-dependent dates can change. The order says the government will announce any change to the dates of Eid ul-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Muharram and Milad-un-Nabi after the moon is sighted.
- Weekend holidays are not moved. In 2027, several gazetted holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday, including Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Dussehra, Guru Nanak Jayanti and Christmas. No substitute day off is given.
- State holidays differ. States publish their own lists, and banks follow the Reserve Bank of India's list, which is usually released towards the end of the year.

Planning around the 2027 festivals
For every long weekend and the best days to take leave, see our long weekends in India 2027 guide.
- Book early for Diwali and Holi travel. Trains and flights fill up weeks ahead of both. Diwali falls on a Friday in 2027, so the weekend of 29 to 31 October will be one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
- Check your own state's list. A festival that is a holiday in one state may be a working day in another.
- For Eid, watch for the moon-sighting announcement the evening before, and for Hindu festivals, check a local panchang if the exact timing of a puja matters to you.
We will publish detailed guides for each major festival through the year, starting with the links above.
From the first kites of Sankranti to the last carols of Christmas, 2027 has a festival for almost every month. Save this calendar, and check back as we add detailed guides for each one.
