Jailer 2, Rajinikanth's sequel to his 2023 blockbuster, has crossed ₹600 crore in worldwide box office collections in just eight days, according to trade estimates. The film grossed about ₹570 crore to ₹576 crore worldwide in its first week, The Week and The Daily Jagran reported, citing trade trackers, making it one of the fastest Tamil films ever to reach these numbers.

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Kalanithi Maran's Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 released worldwide on Thursday, 15 October 2026.

Key points

  • Worldwide: about ₹606 crore by day 8 (22 October), The Week reported, citing Sacnilk.

The Week's own reports give slightly different running totals at different points, which is common with live tracker data. The day-wise numbers above add up to about ₹330 crore for the first seven days, a little higher than the week-one total of ₹317.2 crore that the same report gives.

Reading the day-wise trend

The day-wise figures tell a familiar story for a big star film, with one twist.

  • A huge opening: Nearly ₹60 crore net in India on day 1, a Thursday, is among the biggest opening days ever for a Tamil film.
  • The usual Friday dip: Collections fell on day 2, as they often do after an opening powered by fan shows and first-day bookings.
  • A strong weekend: Saturday and Sunday climbed back above ₹47 crore and ₹55 crore as families joined the fans.
  • The Dussehra boost: Day 6, Tuesday 20 October, was Dussehra, a holiday in much of India, which explains why collections jumped back to about ₹55 crore in the middle of the week.
  • Settling down: Day 7 and day 8 show the expected weekday fall once the holiday and the first rush passed.

India gross₹371.45 crore₹361.60 crore
Overseas gross₹205 crore₹207.75 crore
Worldwide gross₹576.45 crore₹569.35 crore

By the evening of day 8, the film's India gross had reached about ₹391.55 crore and its worldwide total about ₹606.05 crore, The Week reported. It was then less than ₹9 crore short of ₹400 crore gross in India.

Net, gross and worldwide, explained

Indian box office reports use three different numbers, which is why totals can look confusing:

  • India net: ticket sales in India after taxes such as GST. This is the figure trackers report day by day.
  • India gross: ticket sales in India before taxes. It is always higher than net.
  • Worldwide gross: India gross plus overseas gross, the money from cinemas outside India.

None of these is the producer's profit. Cinemas, distributors and taxes all take a share before the producer earns anything, so a film's hit or flop verdict depends on its budget and the deals with distributors, not just the headline number. Trackers such as Sacnilk build their figures from booking data and trade sources, and different trackers often differ by a few crore, as they do here.

Where the overseas money comes from

Tamil films earn heavily abroad. The biggest markets are usually the Gulf countries, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, North America, the United Kingdom and Australia, where large Tamil communities live. Overseas earnings of more than ₹200 crore in a single week show how big this audience has become, and why producers now plan worldwide releases on the same day as India.

Records reported so far

According to The Daily Jagran, Jailer 2 has set several records for Tamil cinema:

  • Biggest four-day worldwide opening for a Tamil film, at about ₹418 crore.
  • Fastest Tamil film to cross ₹300 crore worldwide, and past ₹400 crore globally within four days.
  • First-Monday record for Tamil cinema, with about ₹49.5 crore India gross on 19 October.
  • Biggest opening day for a Tamil film in Karnataka and Kerala.

These records are claimed by trade trackers and media reports; Sun Pictures has not published official audited figures.

The film

Jailer 2 brings back Rajinikanth as Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer of the 2023 hit. The cast includes Vidya Balan, S.J. Suryah, Ramya Krishnan and Suraj Venjaramoodu, with guest appearances by Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Hrithik Roshan, The Week reported.

The guest stars, drawn from Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi cinema, are part of the film's pan-India pitch, and help explain its strong openings in Kerala and Karnataka. The first Jailer had used the same approach, with Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar in cameo roles.

The first Jailer

The original Jailer, released in August 2023 and also directed by Nelson Dilipkumar for Sun Pictures, was one of the biggest Tamil hits of that year. It introduced Rajinikanth as Muthuvel Pandian, a quiet retired jailer who turns ruthless to protect his family, and its mix of mass action, dark comedy and star cameos became a template many films tried to copy. The sequel's opening week shows how much goodwill the first film built: fans packed early shows on the strength of the character and the director's style as much as the star.

Why the numbers matter

  • Rajinikanth at 75: The superstar turns 76 in December. A sequel crossing ₹600 crore in eight days shows his pull at the box office remains unmatched in Tamil cinema.
  • Tamil cinema's reach: Overseas earnings of more than ₹200 crore in a week show how large the market for Tamil films has become in the Gulf, Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, North America and Europe.
  • A strong festive window: The film released in the run-up to Diwali, and its second weekend will show how well it holds against new releases.

What happens next

The film's second weekend, 24 and 25 October, is the next big test. Trade watchers will be looking at whether it crosses ₹400 crore gross in India and how it compares with the lifetime total of the first Jailer. A big drop in collections on weekdays is normal for star-led films after a heavy opening week.

For readers outside India, Jailer 2 is playing in cinemas in many countries with large Tamil communities. Check local listings for shows, as screen counts often change in the second week.

Eight days, ₹600 crore and counting. The second weekend will decide how far Jailer 2 can go.
