Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has crossed ₹300 crore (about $31 million) in worldwide gross box-office earnings in its first three days, according to estimates from the trade tracker Sacnilk reported by several outlets. The film made about ₹144.6 crore net in India over the three days, and roughly ₹147.5 crore gross overseas.

The figures are trade estimates, not official numbers from the producers.

Key points

  • Worldwide gross after three days: about ₹317 crore to ₹321 crore, depending on the tracker.
  • India net: ₹37.1 crore on day 2 and about ₹47.8 crore on day 3 (Saturday), a rise of nearly 29%.
  • Day 3 language split in India: Tamil ₹34.6 crore, Telugu ₹8.5 crore, Hindi ₹4.25 crore, Kannada ₹45 lakh.
  • Overseas gross by day 3: about ₹147.5 crore to ₹152 crore.
  • Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, with cameos reported from Mohanlal, Jackie Shroff, Vijay Sethupathi, Shiva Rajkumar and Hrithik Roshan.

Jailer 2 box office collection, day by day

According to Sacnilk's estimates cited by the Free Press Journal:

DayIndia net (approx.)
Day 2₹37.1 crore
Day 3 (Saturday, 17 October)₹47.8 crore
Total, 3 days₹144.6 crore net (about ₹169.7 crore gross)

Sacnilk's own report gave slightly different numbers: ₹47.25 crore on day 3 and ₹144.05 crore net in total, with worldwide gross at about ₹321 crore. DNP India put the worldwide figure at ₹321 crore, split into about ₹169 crore from India and ₹152 crore overseas.

"Net" means earnings after taxes; "gross" includes taxes. Trade trackers estimate both from ticket sales data, and producers' official figures, when they're published, often differ.

Who's in Jailer 2

Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer from the 2023 hit Jailer. Nelson Dilipkumar directs again. Reported cast members include returning actors Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa, along with newcomers to the series such as S.J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty and Vidya Balan, and cameos from Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Vijay Sethupathi, Jackie Shroff and Hrithik Roshan.

Its budget has been reported at between ₹240 crore and ₹300 crore, though the producers haven't confirmed it.

The overseas numbers

Almost half the worldwide gross so far has come from outside India, a sign of Rajinikanth's pull with Tamil audiences in Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, the Gulf, the UK, the US and beyond. Tamil films often release overseas a day early, with premieres for the diaspora.

Why it matters: Rajinikanth, now in his mid-70s, remains one of the biggest box-office draws in Asia. A ₹300 crore three-day start puts Jailer 2 among the strongest openings of the year for any Indian film, in any language. For readers abroad, it's a reminder that India's biggest film industry isn't only Bollywood: Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films regularly outdo Hindi releases.

The real test comes on Monday. Big stars can fill a weekend; what turns a hit into a record is how many people keep coming once the first rush is over, especially with Diwali releases only three weeks away.
