Sacred Games season 3 release date, coming or cancelled?
Is Sacred Games season 3 coming? There is no release date. What Anurag Kashyap and Nawazuddin Siddiqui have said, why it stalled and what Netflix has not said.
There is no release date for Sacred Games season 3, and as of October 2026 nothing suggests one is coming. Netflix has never announced a third season, and the people who made the show have said on record that it is not happening. Co-director Anurag Kashyap has said Netflix "shut it down", and lead actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has said there is nothing left of the original novel to adapt.
Netflix itself has never formally announced a cancellation either, which is why fans still search for a release date seven years after season 2. Here is everything that has been said, when it was said, and why a third season looks unlikely.
Key points
- Sacred Games season 3 release date: none. Netflix has not announced or confirmed a third season.
- Anurag Kashyap said in 2023 that "Season three was supposed to come out, but they shut it down, Netflix would know why."

- Netflix has not publicly confirmed a cancellation either.
- Seasons 1 and 2, 16 episodes in all, remain on Netflix.

What Anurag Kashyap said
Anurag Kashyap, who directed the Ganesh Gaitonde scenes in both seasons, has given the clearest account. Speaking on Mashable India's The Bombay Journey in early 2023, he said a third season had been planned but stopped.
"Season three was supposed to come out, but they shut it down, Netflix would know why," he said, Outlook India reported. He linked it to the mood in the streaming industry after the row over Amazon Prime Video's political drama Tandav in 2021, saying: "OTT ki aaj ki date mein himmat nahi hai, Tandav ke baad sab dar gaye hain." In English, roughly: streaming platforms don't have the nerve today; after Tandav, everyone is scared. India.com carried the same remarks.
Kashyap had also dismissed season 3 rumours years earlier. In 2019, he called out a fake casting call for Sacred Games season 3 and said no third season was being made, Gulf News reported.
What Nawazuddin Siddiqui said
Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who played the gangster Ganesh Gaitonde, gave a creative reason. "Whatever had to be said from the original novel has already been said," he told SpotboyE, India.com and DESIblitz reported. "There is nothing left in Vikram Chandra's novel to be put in Season 3."
That matters because Sacred Games was adapted from Vikram Chandra's 2006 novel of the same name. Season 2 already took the story to its climax, a race to stop a nuclear attack on Mumbai.
What Netflix has said
Netflix has not announced a third season and has not issued a public statement cancelling the show, Outlook India and India.com noted. Netflix often lets series end quietly without a formal cancellation announcement, and that silence is the main reason "Sacred Games season 3 release date" is still a popular search.
Several websites claim Netflix "confirmed" the cancellation, but the statements they cite come from Kashyap and Siddiqui, not from Netflix.

Why season 3 is unlikely
Putting the public statements together, four reasons stand out.
1. The story is finished. Season 2 brought both main plots to an end, the hunt for the bomb in Mumbai and the story of Gaitonde and Guruji. With the novel's material used up, a third season would need a new story written from scratch.
2. A changed streaming climate. Kashyap blamed the caution that followed the Tandav controversy, when the show faced police complaints and its makers apologised. India also brought in new rules for streaming platforms in 2021, under the IT Rules, that set up a grievance and self-regulation system. Sacred Games, with its blunt politics, religion and violence, is the kind of show platforms became more careful about.
3. Mixed response to season 2. Season 1 was a huge hit, but season 2 received a more mixed response from critics and viewers, Outlook India and other outlets noted. That weakens the case for a costly third season.
4. The team has moved on. Creator Vikramaditya Motwane, Kashyap and co-director Neeraj Ghaywan have all made other films and series since 2019, and the main cast, led by Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, are busy with other projects. Reassembling the team seven years later would be hard.
Could Sacred Games season 3 still happen?
Never say never in streaming. A new story could in theory follow Sartaj Singh, Saif Ali Khan's police inspector, whose story ends on an open note in season 2, or take place in a new setting with some returning characters. But nobody involved has said anything about such a plan. If Netflix ever announces Sacred Games season 3, it will come through Netflix India's official channels first. We will update this page if that happens.
Until then, treat any "Sacred Games 3 release date", trailer or cast list you see on YouTube or social media as fake. Fan-made trailers and fake casting calls have circulated for years.

Why Sacred Games still matters
Sacred Games changed Indian streaming. As Netflix's first Indian original series, released in 191 countries, it showed that a dark, adult Hindi drama could find a worldwide audience. Season 1 was the only Indian series on The New York Times' list of the 30 best international TV shows of the decade, and season 2 earned an International Emmy nomination. Its lines, from "Kabhi kabhi lagta hai apun hi bhagwan hai" to Gaitonde's monologues, became internet memes. The shows that followed on every platform were measured against it.
Shows like Sacred Games to watch instead
- Paatal Lok (Prime Video): a gritty police investigation that, like Sacred Games, follows a tired cop through India's underworld and politics.
- Mirzapur (Prime Video): crime, power and violence in small-town Uttar Pradesh.
- Delhi Crime (Netflix): based on the investigation into the 2012 Delhi gang rape case; season 1 won the International Emmy for Best Drama Series in 2020.
- Kohrra (Netflix): a slow-burn murder mystery set in rural Punjab.
- Jubilee (Prime Video): Vikramaditya Motwane's period drama about the Hindi film industry in its early years.
Gaitonde once said that sometimes he felt he was God. Netflix, it seems, has decided that two seasons were enough.
