Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin in India around Tuesday, 9 February, and Eid ul-Fitr is expected on Wednesday, 10 March 2027, according to Islamic calendar estimates and the Union government's holiday list for 2027.

Both dates depend on the sighting of the new moon, so they can move by a day. Here is what is expected, why it can change, and what the dates mean for holidays, fasting and travel.

Key points

  • Ramadan 2027 is expected to start in India around Tuesday 9 February, a day after the expected start in Saudi Arabia.
  • Jamat-ul-Vida, the last Friday of Ramadan, falls on Friday 5 March (government restricted holiday).
  • Eid ul-Fitr: expected Wednesday 10 March 2027 (gazetted holiday); some calendars give Thursday 11 March.
  • The final dates are announced after the moon is sighted, usually on the evening before.
  • Fasting days in February and March are shorter and cooler than in recent summer Ramadans.

Why Eid dates depend on the moon

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is lunar. Each month begins when the new crescent moon is sighted after sunset, so a month has either 29 or 30 days. Ramadan is the ninth month, and Eid ul-Fitr is the first day of the tenth month, Shawwal.

Because the lunar year is about 11 days shorter than the Western calendar year, Ramadan comes around 10 to 11 days earlier every year. In 2027 it moves into February and early March.

In India, moon-sighting committees and religious leaders announce the start of Ramadan and the date of Eid after reports of the moon are confirmed. The new moon is usually seen in India a day after it is seen in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, so Indian dates are often one day later. Kerala sometimes follows a different sighting and may begin or end Ramadan a day earlier than the rest of the country.

The government's holiday order says the same: the dates of Eid ul-Fitr and other moon-dependent holidays can change, and any change will be announced after the moon is sighted.

Ramadan 2027, what to expect

Fasting hours: Ramadan in February and March means shorter fasting days than in the summer Ramadans of recent years. In north India, the fast from dawn (Sehri) to sunset (Iftar) will last roughly 12 to 13 hours, and the weather will be mild.

The daily routine:

  • Sehri (Suhoor): A meal before dawn, after which the fast begins.
  • Roza: The fast itself, with no food or water from dawn to sunset.
  • Iftar: The meal that breaks the fast at sunset, traditionally starting with dates and water.
  • Taraweeh: Special night prayers in mosques, during which the whole Quran is often recited over the month.

Exact Sehri and Iftar times change every day and differ from city to city. Use the timetable from your local mosque.

Laylat al-Qadr: The "Night of Power" is believed to fall on one of the odd nights in the last ten days of Ramadan. Many Muslims in India observe it on the 27th night. If Ramadan begins on 9 February, that night would fall around 6 March 2027.

Jamat-ul-Vida: The last Friday of Ramadan, on Friday 5 March 2027, draws very large congregations at mosques such as Delhi's Jama Masjid.

Eid ul-Fitr 2027, the day of celebration

Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of the month of fasting. The day usually begins with:

  • Zakat al-Fitr (Fitra): A charity paid before the Eid prayer so that people in need can also celebrate. The amount is usually announced by local religious bodies, based on the price of staple food.
  • Eid prayer: Special congregational prayers in the morning at mosques and open grounds called Eidgahs.
  • Greetings and visits: "Eid Mubarak" greetings, new clothes, visits to family and friends, and gifts of money (Eidi) for children.
  • Food: Sheer khurma and seviyan (vermicelli cooked in milk) are the signature dishes in many Indian homes, along with biryani and kebabs. Families often cook through the night before Eid.

Ramadan nights in India's cities

In many Indian cities, Ramadan evenings turn the old quarters into food streets that stay busy well past midnight.

  • Delhi: The lanes around Jama Masjid and Matia Mahal fill with stalls selling kebabs, nihari and sweets after Iftar.
  • Hyderabad: The area around the Charminar is known for its Ramadan markets, and haleem, a slow-cooked dish of meat, wheat and lentils, is the dish of the season.
  • Mumbai: Mohammed Ali Road near Minara Masjid is famous for its late-night food stalls.
  • Lucknow and Kolkata: The old city around the Chowk in Lucknow and Zakaria Street in Kolkata draw crowds for Iftar food.

With Ramadan in February and March in 2027, the evenings will be pleasant, and these food walks are likely to be especially crowded. Go early, and be respectful of people breaking their fast and praying.

Holidays and planning

  • Central government: Eid ul-Fitr on Wednesday 10 March 2027 is a gazetted holiday for central government offices in Delhi. If the moon is sighted differently, the government will announce the change.
  • States and banks: State governments and banks publish their own lists. Many states also give a holiday for Eid, but the date can be revised at short notice.
  • Travel: Trains to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir are busy in the days before Eid. Book early, and allow for a one-day change in the date.

Ramadan 2027 in the Gulf and abroad

For the millions of Indians in the Gulf, the Saudi and UAE dates matter. Ramadan there is expected to begin about a day earlier, around 8 February, with Eid ul-Fitr about 9 or 10 March, depending on the moon. Many Gulf employers shorten working hours during Ramadan.

In the UK, US and Canada, mosques and community bodies follow either local sighting or the Saudi announcement, so families should check with their local mosque.
