India Young Professionals Scheme ballot 2027 explained
The UK India Young Professionals Scheme gives 3,000 Indians aged 18 to 30 a two-year UK visa through a free ballot. Dates, costs and how to prepare for 2027.
The India Young Professionals Scheme is the only UK visa that lets a young Indian graduate live and work in Britain for two years without a job offer or a sponsor. There is a catch: you can't simply apply. You first have to be picked in a free online ballot, and the ballot window has lasted only about two days.
Both 2026 ballots are now closed. This guide explains how the scheme works, what the ballot has looked like in past years, what it costs, and what to get ready now so you can enter the 2027 ballot the moment it opens.
Key points
- 3,000 places a year for Indian citizens aged 18 to 30 with a bachelor's degree or higher.
- Entry to the ballot is free. Winners are picked at random and emailed within two weeks.
- Winners have 90 days to apply. The visa fee is £340 and the health surcharge is £1,552 for two years.
- You need £2,530 in savings, held for 28 days in a row.
- The 2027 ballot dates are not out yet. In 2025 and 2026 the main ballot opened in mid-February.
- Last checked 27 Oct 2026. Not legal advice; check GOV.UK before you act.
What the scheme is
The UK and India agreed the scheme in 2023 as a two-way deal. Indian citizens get up to 24 months in the UK, and British citizens get the same in India. On the UK side it is run as a version of the Youth Mobility Scheme visa, so the online form you use is the Youth Mobility form with "India" chosen as your nationality.
On the visa you can work in most jobs, study, and even run a small business, as long as your premises are rented, your equipment is worth no more than £5,000 and you have no employees. You can't work as a professional sportsperson or coach, you can't claim most benefits, and you can't extend the visa. The scheme expects you to return to India after the two years, according to the British High Commission.
Over 2,100 of these visas went to Indian nationals in 2023, the British High Commission said, the first full year of the scheme.
Who can enter the ballot
You must meet every visa rule on the day you enter, because the ballot asks you to declare that you do. According to GOV.UK, you must:
- be an Indian citizen aged 18 to 30, and at least 18 on the date you plan to travel;
- hold a qualification at UK bachelor's degree level or above (RQF level 6, 7 or 8), or an overseas equivalent;
- have £2,530 in savings;
- have no children under 18 who live with you or who you support financially;
- never have been in the UK on this scheme or a Youth Mobility Scheme visa before.
A three-year Indian bachelor's degree usually counts as degree level, but if you aren't sure, ask your university for written confirmation that you completed and passed the degree. You'll need that letter later anyway.
How the ballot has worked so far
The pattern has been similar each year. GOV.UK announces a short window, usually a few days ahead. You fill in a short form with your name, date of birth, passport details, a scan of your passport, your phone number and your email. Each person gets one entry per ballot; extra attempts are ignored.
| Year | Main ballot | Second ballot |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 18 to 20 February | Later in the year |
| 2026 | 17 to 19 February (2:30 PM IST open and close) | July |
| 2027 | Not announced yet | Not announced yet |
In 2026, most of the 3,000 places went in the February ballot and the rest in July, according to GOV.UK's ballot page. The page now says all 2026 ballots are closed and that details of future ballots will be published there.
Results arrive by email within two weeks of the ballot closing. If you don't win, you can't appeal, but you can enter later ballots as long as you still qualify.
What it costs if you win
Use these figures to plan, converted at about ₹127 to the pound (reference rate, 23 Oct 2026).
| Item | Pounds | About in rupees |
|---|---|---|
| Visa application fee | £340 | ₹43,000 |
| Immigration health surcharge (2 years at £776) | £1,552 | ₹1.97 lakh |
| Savings you must show (not a fee) | £2,530 | ₹3.21 lakh |
| Cash needed up front | £4,422 | ₹5.6 lakh |
The savings stay yours, but they must sit in your account for at least 28 days in a row, and the last of those days must fall within 31 days of your application. A salary credit and a quick withdrawal won't do. Add flights, a tuberculosis test and a police clearance certificate from India to your budget.
The 90-day clock after you win
Winning the ballot only gets you an invitation. From the date of that email you have 90 days to apply online, pay the fee and surcharge, and give your fingerprints and photo at a visa centre. After you apply, you must travel to the UK within six months. GOV.UK says most decisions arrive within three weeks.
That timeline is the reason to prepare before the ballot opens. People lose places because their savings history is too short or their degree letter takes weeks to arrive.
A checklist to prepare for the 2027 ballot now
- Check your passport. It should be valid for the whole two years you plan to spend in the UK, and you'll need it to enter the ballot.
- Get written confirmation of your degree from your university.
- Park £2,530 (about ₹3.2 lakh) in your own account and leave it untouched. A month's history is the minimum; more is safer.
- Apply for an Indian police clearance certificate through Passport Seva once you win, since it has a validity window.
- Find the nearest approved TB test clinic for UK visas.
- Watch GOV.UK's ballot page and the British High Commission's social channels from January. Enter in the first hours; the window is short.
Why it matters
For a 25-year-old engineer or designer in Pune or Kochi, the usual route to UK work is the Skilled Worker visa, which now needs a sponsoring employer, a graduate-level job and usually £41,700 a year. The Young Professionals Scheme skips all of that. You can take any lawful job, try a few, and build UK experience before you decide what's next. For Indian students who already studied in the UK, the Graduate route does a similar job; this scheme is for people who didn't.
Beware of agents
The ballot is free and random. No agent can raise your chances, and the British High Commission has warned people about agencies that promise a place for money. Enter only through GOV.UK.
The scheme rewards people who are ready on day one. Sort your degree letter and savings now, and the two days of the 2027 ballot will be the easy part.
